  27. What is SurfinGuard?
  28. --------------------
  29. SurfinGuard is security software that protects computer 
  30. resources from the risks associated with malicious 
  31. executables transferred from the Internet to the users 
  32. computer. SurfinGuard creates a virtual zone 
  33. (i.e., sandbox) on the users computer, in which these 
  34. potentially problematic files are executed and monitored 
  35. for a possible violation of the users self-determined 
  36. security policy.

  38. What is Executable Security?
  39. -----------------------------
  40. Executables (.exe files) are programs that can be delivered 
  41. as e-mail attachments, file transfers via Instant Messaging 
  42. applications, or they can be downloaded directly from 
  43. Websites. In addition, executables are capable of doing 
  44. anything to a users computer. For instance, malicious 
  45. executables can steal, alter or erase files. They can 
  46. automatically provide remote access to external users via 
  47. Trojan backdoors, or launch dangerous Internet worms that 
  48. may be capable of destroying files.

  50. How does SurfinGuard protect you?
  51. ---------------------------------
  52. SurfinGuard runs executables in a "safe-zone" and monitors 
  53. their behavior for malicious activity. For example, if an 
  54. executable file violates a security policy, it will be 
  55. stopped before any damage occurs.

  57. SurfinGuard offers the user a level of protection beyond 
  58. traditional reactive anti-virus technology, since it does 
  59. not rely on database updates in order to work.

  61. SurfinGuard will protect the user from unknown as well as known 
  62. Trojan Horses and worms when they are first released, since it 
  63. is looking for malicious behavior and it is not simply scanning 
  64. for known signatures. For this reason, SurfinGuard will 
  65. automatically protect the user from new variants of attacks, 
  66. without requiring any updates.

  68. Any monitored executable will be examined to detect one of 
  69. the following attempts:

  71. ╖    To read and write files within the userÆs file system
  72. ╖    To create a network connection
  73. ╖    To write to the registry
  74. ╖    To initiate additional programs on the userÆs computer

  76. The SurfinGuard user can define a security policy that meets 
  77. his/her specific needs. The following represent the four 
  78. possible security policies:
  79.  
  80. ╖    Block exe files from running
  81. ╖    Monitor all exe files while running
  82. ╖    Ask me before running exe files
  83. ╖    Off
  84.  
  85. If the policy is set to either "Block exe files from running", 
  86. "Monitor all exe files while running" or "Ask me before running 
  87. exe files", the executables arriving via the Internet are 
  88. "flagged" for future monitoring before they are stored on 
  89. the hard disk. If the policy is "Off", the executables are not 
  90. flagged, and it will not be possible to distinguish them from 
  91. other files on the userÆs hard disk.

  93. When "flagged" executables are opened, SurfinGuard automatically 
  94. runs them in the SafeZone. The user will only be notified if a 
  95. security violation has occurred.

  111. Supported Operating Systems

  113. SurfinGuard does not support Windows 3.x, Windows 2000 or 
  114. Windows NT 3.51.

  116. Installation
  117. -------------
  118. 1.    When uninstalling SurfinGuard, use SurfinGuardÆs Uninstall 
  119.         program. Do not use third party programs.
  120. 2.    Do not install SurfinGuard on a computer that contains the 
  121.         SurfinShield Client or the SurfinGate Console.
  122. 3.    Do not install SurfinGuard on a computer that contains 
  123.         Windows 95 with USB support.

  127. 4.    SurfinGuard does not protect a computer from Executables within 
  128.     ZIP files coming from the web. For this reason, the user should 
  129.     run an executable extracted from a ZIP file received from the web 
  130.     in the "Safe Zone", in order to make sure it is safe.
